Phase 2 dilemma: Backpack or suitcase??

Only 2 weeks to go and Phase 2 of the TDM program will start. On the 4th of February 2018, we will take a flight from Amsterdam to Melbourne. Since we will be abroad for a few months, the time to pack my stuff is almost there. However, should I pack my backpack or is a suitcase a better option? Dilemma

Travellers can be divided in two teams: Team Backpack and Team Suitcase. Some people swear by their backpack, other people argue that in 90% of the cases a suitcase will be a suitable option. What are the pro's and con's of travelling with a backpack or suitcase?

Suitcase

An advantage of a suitcase is quite simple, you don't have to carry your luggage on your back. A backpack can easily weight 20kg, which will result in a sweaty body in 3 seconds when travelling in countries were the minimum temperature is above 25°degrees. A suitcase is also easier to pack and your clothes won't be end in a messy bunch. Moreover, unless walking in the jungle, you can just roll your suitcase.

Backpack

An advantage of a backpack is that you're carying your luggage on your back, which makes your hands free to read a map for example. Moreover, a backpack fits in small spaces, so when travelling by public transport, the chance that your backpack will fit in a small corner is much higher. Besides, most hostels have space under a bed to safely store your backpack, where a suitcase definetely won't fit.

Winner?

Both the suitcase as the backpack have their advantages. I think both can be suitable options in different cases. I think the best option depends on the travel purpose, destination and the way you prefer to travel. At the moment, I'm still not sure if I will take a backpack or suitcase. Nevertheless, I think for me in the end it is just a luxury problem, where there isn't a bad choice to make!
